Greek vs Roman
Greek and Roman gods compared
Roman writers match many of their gods with Greek ones, but the surviving sources do not always treat the two alike. Each comparison below sets the Greek passages beside the Roman ones, with every passage cited.
- Ares vs Mars: Zeus's anger at Ares in the Iliad, and Mars as father of Romulus and Remus.
- Athena vs Minerva: Hesiod, Homer and Pausanias on Athena, and Ovid on Minerva's festival.
- Demeter vs Ceres: the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and Livy on the temple of Ceres.
- Eros vs Cupid: Hesiod's primal Eros and Ovid's winged son of Venus.
- Cronus vs Saturn: Hesiod's Cronus, and Virgil's and Livy's Saturn.
